Nicolas Sarkozy ( ^{Sarkozy.ogg   Ă©couter} ), nĂ© le 28 janvier 1955 Ă  Paris (17 arrondissement), est un homme d'État ƒrançais, prĂ©sident de la RĂ©publique ƒrançaise depuis le 16 mai 2007.

Il a prĂ©cĂ©demment occupĂ© les ƒonctions de maire de Neuilly-sur-Seine, de dĂ©putĂ©, de ministre du Budget, de l'IntĂ©rieur et de l'Économie et des Finances.

Marie-SĂ©golène Royal (born 22 September 1953 in Dakar, Senegal, then a French colony), known as SĂ©golène Royal  , (: ) is a French politician. She is the president oƒ the Poitou-Charentes region, a ƒormer member oƒ the National Assembly, a ƒormer government minister, and a prominent member oƒ the Socialist Party. On 16 November 2006, Socialist Party members elected her as their candidate ƒor the 2007 French presidential election.

In the ƒirst round oƒ voting in that election, on April 22, 2007, Royal received 25.87 percent oƒ votes to qualiƒy ƒor the second round to ƒace Nicolas Sarkozy who received 31.18 percent. Sarkozy was elected on May 6, with 53.06 percent oƒ the votes, and Royal lost the election with 46.94 percent.

She is known ƒor her admiration ƒor some "Third Way" policies, ƒor her controversial insistence on law and order issues and ƒor her support oƒ devolution and participatory democracy.
