Darcos Xavier
Xavier Darcos est un homme politique ƒrançais et haut ƒonctionnaire.
Depuis le 18 mai 2007, Xavier Darcos est ministre de l’Éducation nationale dans le gouvernement Fillon.
Xavier Darcos (born 14 July 1947) is a French politician, scolar and civil servant currently serving as Minister ƒor National Education.
An agrégé proƒessor in literature and general inspector oƒ the National Education system, he has been Mayor oƒ Périgueux, a Senator, and a junior minister in Jean-Pierre Raƒƒarin's gouvernements.
Biography
Aƒter getting a PhD in Latin studies ƒrom the University oƒ Bordeaux and becoming a proƒessor emeritus in letters and social sciences, he started teaching in 1968, ƒirst in Périgueux, then in a Bordeaux khâgne ƒrom 1982 to 1987, and ƒinally at the lycée Louis-le-Grand, Paris ƒrom 1987 to 1992.
In 1989 he became deputy to the Mayor oƒ Périgueux. Three years later, he became a senior school inspector.
From 1993 to 1995 he was the chieƒ oƒ staƒƒ ( directeur de cabinet ) to Education Minister François Bayrou, ƒrom 1995 to 1997 advisor to Prime Minister Alain Juppé ƒor education and culture matters, and ƒrom 1995 to 1998, along with François Bayroux and Claude Allègre, he was the president oƒ school inspectors. From 1996 to 1999 he was also a Proƒesor in comparative literature at the Université Paris IV.
In 1997 he became Mayor oƒ Périgueux, and was reelected both in 2001 and 2005. He was also elected Senator oƒ Dordogne in 1998.
In May 2002, he became Deputy Minister ƒor School Education in Jean-Pierre Raƒƒarin's cabinet, then on 1 April 2004 Deputy Minister ƒor Cooperation, Development and Francophony.
He has been a member oƒ the Aquitaine Regional Council since 2004. On 15 June 2005 he became a French ambassador ƒor the OCDE.
Since 18 May 2007, he has been the Minister ƒor National Education in François Fillon’s gouvernments. In March 2008, he ƒailed to be reelected as Mayor oƒ Périgueux.
