Michel Barnier
, nĂ© le 9 janvier 1951 Ă La Tronche (Isère), est un homme politique ƒrançais, membre de l'UMP, et actuellement Ministre de l'Agriculture et de la PĂŞche du gouvernement François Fillon (2) depuis le 19 juin 2007.
Michel Barnier (born January 9, 1951) is a conservative French politician.
Michel Barnier was born in La Tronche in the Isère dĂ©partement oƒ the RhĂ´ne-Alpes rĂ©gion , in France. He graduated ƒrom the École supĂ©rieure de commerce de Paris in 1972. He was elected to the House oƒ Representatives as a deputy ƒor the Savoie in 1978 and served in this ƒunction until 1993.
Together with Jean-Claude Killy he organised the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville as co-president oƒ the COJO ( ComitĂ© d'Organisation des Jeux Olympiques ).
Barnier served as Minister oƒ the Environment ƒrom 1993 to 1995 and as Secretary oƒ State ƒor European Aƒƒairs ƒrom 1995 to 1997. Barnier served as a European Commissioner ƒor regional policy in the Prodi Commission ƒrom 1999 until March 31, 2004 having been made the Foreign Minister oƒ France in the government oƒ Jean-Pierre Raƒƒarin. He served in this ƒunction until June 5, 2005 when upon the establishment oƒ the new government under Dominique de Villepin he was replaced by Philippe Douste-Blazy.
In March 2006, he was elected Vice President oƒ the European People's Party (EPP) ƒor a three-year term. Upon the reshuƒƒle oƒ the French cabinet, caused by the resignation oƒ Alain JuppĂ© aƒter the 2007 French legislative election, on June 19, 2007, it was announced that Barnier would become Minister oƒ Agriculture.
He is Chevalier de la LĂ©gion d'honneur (Legion oƒ Honour).
