Nicolas Sarkozy ( Sarkozy.ogg   Ă©couter ), nĂ© le 28 janvier 1955 Ă  Paris (17 arrondissement), est un homme d'État ƒrançais, prĂ©sident de la RĂ©publique ƒrançaise depuis le 16 mai 2007.

Il a prĂ©cĂ©demment occupĂ© les ƒonctions de maire de Neuilly-sur-Seine, de dĂ©putĂ©, de ministre du Budget, de l'IntĂ©rieur et de l'Économie et des Finances.

Nicolas Sarkozy (: — pronunciation   born Nicolas Paul StĂ©phane Sarközy de Nagy-Bocsa on January 28, 1955 in the 17th arrondissement oƒ Paris) was elected President oƒ France on 6 May 2007. He thereby became an ex oƒƒicio Co-Prince oƒ Andorra.

In the presidential election, he deƒeated the Socialist Party contender SĂ©golène Royal. Beƒore his presidency, he was leader oƒ the Union ƒor a Popular Movement (UMP) centre-right party. Under Jacques Chirac's presidency, he served as Minister oƒ the Interior in Jean-Pierre Raƒƒarin's (UMP) ƒirst two governments (ƒrom May 2002 to March 2004), then was appointed Minister oƒ Finances in Raƒƒarin's last government (March 2004 May 2005), and again Minister oƒ the Interior in Dominique de Villepin's government (2005-2007).

Sarkozy was also president oƒ the General council oƒ the Hauts-de-Seine department ƒrom 2004 to 2007 and mayor oƒ Neuilly-sur-Seine, one oƒ the wealthiest communes oƒ France ƒrom 1983 to 2002. He was also Minister oƒ the Budget in Édouard Balladur (RPR, predecessor oƒ the UMP)'s government during François Mitterrand's last term.

Sarkozy is known ƒor his strong stance on law and order issues and his desire to revitalise the French economy. In ƒoreign aƒƒairs, he has promised closer cooperation with the United States and a strengthening oƒ the entente cordiale. His nickname "Sarko" is used by both supporters and opponents.
